  • Physiology

I started in cycling in 1978 as a 12 years old boy in a state run cycling school with 3 full time coaches, a mechanic and a myriad of half broken sport's bicycles.

By 1983, I was offered a place in a Center for Olympic Development, a state funded professional squad of 24 cyclists, based in Kiev out of  the National University of Physical Training and Sports of Ukraine and specializing in Olympic team time trials. The Center, appropriately named “Titan”, was the second largest of its kind in the USSR.

Moving to “Titan” proved to be a good move for me, launching my cycling career onto the national scene where I quickly was selected into the Soviet National Team in early 1984. From this point on and until 1990, I raced in the colors of the Soviet National Team, Ukrainian State Team or “Titan” all around the country and abroad. Some of the highlights of this period include:

1984
1st place at the Junior Road World Championships (TTT)
1st place at Cherepovich GP, stage 1
1st place at Cherepovich GP, stage 2
1st place at Cherepovich GP, stage 3

1st place at TTT GP of Hungary
1st place in ITT at the National Junior World Championships selection trials
1st place in TTT at the National Junior World Championships selection trials

1985

1st place at the GDR Open TTT National Championships. Beating Olaf Ludwig, Uwe Raab, Uwe Ampler and their friends at their own game, on their own territory felt good
5th place at the National ITT Championship

1986
1st place at the National Military Stage Race Championships, stage 1
1st place at the National Military Stage Race Championships, stage 2
3rd place at the National Military Stage Race Championships, stage 3
4th place at the National 2 men TTT Championship

1987
3rd place Kaunas GP

1989
1st place at the Ukrainian Road Championship

1990
3rd place at Alma-Ata GP

The 1991-92 seasons, being based in Denmark, I raced for a Copenhagen's “Amager” team.

Moving in 1993 to Montreal, Canada, saw me winning or finishing on the podium in almost every race I entered. The most notable success being 1st place at the Am-Pro criterium at Lac-Megantic GP in Quebec as well as winning a season long Coupe du Quebec.

In 1995-96, while in the last two years of my racing career, I started assisting my young teammates with coaching, nutrition and racing strategies advice which led to significant gains in their performance.

My family and I have relocated to Australia in 1997 where I have pursued a career in Digital Media, Web Design and later in Digital Photography . However, in 2007 I decided to return to cycling as a coach with the desire to implement my first hand knowledge of probably one of the best training methodologies ever developed.

I'm currently residing in Brisbane where I'm coaching an array of cyclists from across Australia ranging from elite to recreational categories.
